Re: [T3] The Roof Rack nightmmare continues....

A friend of mine just gave me one of these all-metal roofracks for my
squareback (full-length, really cool)...but it didn't even have the clips
to attach it to the roof...I went to the hardware store and found some
threaded rod coupling nuts (5/16" standard size; like long hex nuts that
enable you to make 1 long piece out of 2 shorter pieces of threaded rod
stock)...anyway I screwed those halfway onto each of the threaded pieces
coming off the roof rack. I went to REI and found some Yakima rack clips
that would work ($40 though :-/)...then I found some 5/16 standard bolts
that would thread through a wash, through the hole in the Yakima clip, and
then into the coupling nut already on the rack. Voila! Its on the car
right now and it fits/looks/works so well! Now if I only had my newly
refurbished engine in the square I could drive it somewhere! :-)

I rushed down to the body shop to try my roof rack on my car today. Even
though it wasn't wood slat like I thought it would be ( not aluminum
either.)
I decided I would get it chromed and fall in love with it anyway. Anyway,
I
proudly marched into the body shop with my roof rack ut it on the car and
guess what??? I DIDN'T FIT!!!!!!!! It sat flat on the roof with the
little
doodads that connect to the rain gutter "Floating" 5" inches above the
rain
gutter sand about 1 1/2" inward to the roof. It is salvageable I've
already
have the plans in mind. Anyone that sells any car part make sure that you
REALLY know what car it came off of because the guy that sold it said that
it
was a Notchback roof rack but he was wrong.
