Very sick 1971 Squareback

Hello All,
A few weeks ago, the muffler and oil cooler seals were replaced on
my '71 square (thanks to the help of Dave, a fellow list member, and one
heck of a nice guy). It drove so nice and quiet, and did not leak oil
all over the engine. The problem is, on my way home (work was done at
Daves' house about 100 miles away), The car lost all power, and there
was A LOT of smoke coming from the back of the car. I towed the car
home the next morning. I got it home, and there it sits. Last night, I
started it and it would start, and I moved it under its' own power to
get it near my garage. While it was running, I opened up the engine
compartment cover, and the little cap over the crank case breather was
popped up. This in itself is not unusual. What was strange is the
tremendous amount of smoke coming out of the opening. I think that I
have the symptoms of a hole in the piston or damaged rings. Is there
any way to verify this without pulling the engine? If it is a piston
problem, can I get away with just replacing all the pistons and
cylinders? I can't afford to do a complete and proper rebuild, I just
need to get the car on the road again. When I started it last night,
there were no expensive sounds. It seemed to idle rough though. As for
the breather cap, this has always been loose since I have had the car,
but I have never had smoke coming out of it. I think one of the pistons
is shot, and that a lot of exhaust is being dumped into the case.
Someone please give me some wonderful advise. If I do need new pistons
and cylinders, and could expect to have some reasonable engine life
remaining, where is the best/cheapest place to buy them from. I don't
want ones that are so cheep that they are junk, but I don't need super
performance parts either. Any and all help and support and
encouragement are appreciated.

Car information:
1971 Squareback
Fuel injected
new muffler (not NOS, but new to me and no holes)
new oil cooler seals (the correct ones, with the proper size hole)
everything is stock (as far as I know)

Thanks,
