Hi Everett and other german specialists :-)
I don・t know wich dictionary you were using but a "Anh馬gerkupplung"
is a tow hook. 
To split the word: "Anh馬ger" is a trailer. Follower, hmm... OK it is
something that follows the car (hopefully):-)
"Kupplung" is actually a clutch but it also means the link between 
two things i.e. motor and gearbox, but in this case it is between
car and trailer.
