I have though about this a little. Install the AC in the front, in place
of the spare tire (you've got to feel lucky, right?). Perhaps
modification of one of those very small window-mount room A/C units,
rewired for 12vDC. A little research would show how large an electric
motor would be required, then how much the charging system would have to
be upgraded (there is no free lunch -- you'd still be pulling down
several horsepower when in use). Lets say you use a jumbo alternator /
voltage regualtor from a large American car or truck to replace the VW
bits (and that would be a difficult conversion in and of itself). Add a
likewise jumbo battery, too. You'd have to duct the cool air from the
unit (and cut holes in the firewall), but the vents could be hidden
under the dash. In an ideal world, this would be a much more elegant
solution than a standard automotive air conditioner. Does this sound
sane?
