Best advice is to carry collision insurance with your own carrier.  
Place the claim with your own carrier, and let them fight it out with 
the other driver's ins carrier; it's okay, they do that every day.  
You will have a hard time getting more money than you have been 
paying for.  One of the reasons the rates are lower on an old car is 
that the ins co. assumes that it isn't worth much so they charge you 
for only as much coverage as they think you need.  They  do this 
sight unseen, without really making it clear to you what is 
happening.  The only way to get around this is to buy a "stated 
value" policy.  The down side is that you then end up paying more.

OTOH, they will often try to get you to settle for a low amount.  It 
probably pays to play hard to get.
