Re: Cheap Beaters

I paid $400 for my 1971 fuel-injected auto Fastback in Seattle last year. I found it in the Seattle
Cars For Sale newsgroup. Until then, I never knew what T-IIIs were! When I made my first meeting
with the guy (who was selling it for his 60+ year old first-owner mom), I loved the car immediately.
It was sitting for a while, but we were able to jump-start it right away. He was willing to let me
drive it for a few days to test-drive it. The car looked great, though a little faded in its fiery
red paint, but its interior was excellent. The guy's hunch was that it had only 70+K miles (the odo
stopped at 41+K).

Greg, this is where your web-page come in really useful! I did some research on the Web to find out
more about VWs and your info clinched my decision to buy the car. The next day, I took it to the
DMW to get it emissions tested. I figured this would tell me a little about the condition of the
engine. Lo and behold, it passed the test despite sitting in the yard for years! It was off
immediately to get the car registered. Well, to make a long story short, I later found out that I
probably passed the test because two of the injectors were leaking and not firing at all (as told by
the mechanic who tuned the car up a month after my purchase). Possibly, I passed the test because
of the low hydrcarbon reading from not having all injectors firing upthe engine ...hahaha....maybe
here's the trick to beat the emissions test in California....

So, this began the $400 love tale with "Mia Bambino".......
