Hi. I have a question regarding my 1965 Squareback. It has a 6V, 1500cc, dual carb engine, completely stock, except for a 009 distributor. It has trouble starting in that I have to crank it for a while and floor the pedal to get it to start. It then runs and drives great, no hesitation, no cutting out, etc. I noticed that when I was jumping the car with a 12V battery because I ran down the wimpy 6V, 420 cold cranking amp battery that is currently in it, it started much easier. The electrical and fuel systems seem to be in good order. What could be wrong? Do I need a battery with more amps? I thought maybe the carbs might need to be rebuilt because I had some cutting out but that turned out to be old fuel lines that were crushed by the stock air cleaner. Could it be the accelerator pumps? Or would it cut out at high speeds/under a load if the accelerator pumps were bad? Any help is much appreciated. Also, what should the valve clearance be set to? .004", .006", or .008"? The motor says .004" on the sticker, one of my books says set all 1500s to 006", no matter what the sticker says, and another book says .008". Hope that was enough questions for today, Everett Barnes http://ebus.simplenet.com/Volkswagen ebus@ebus.simplenet.com
