There are no electrical connections between the FI and the ignition system 
on a D-Jetronic car such as the Type III.  This means that you can try 
anything that physically fits in your distributor.  What you can't do is 
change to a non FI distributor.

I have used CDI ignitions for decades, and helped install some other kind in 
a customer's car a year ago.  I don't recall the brand of the latter, but it 
was a molded plastic piece that mounted on the breaker plate in place of the 
points and seemed to work fine.  I recall that the fit was a bit tight, and 
it rubbed in places; that always bothered me because I was concerned that it 
would interfere with the various advance actions.  It seems to work fine, 
however.
