I'm >not even sure if the latter is possible. If the # 1 spark plug wire is not above the notch, then the wrong cylinder is being retarded, because the points rotated with the body. If the rotation was 180 deg then the timing is being done off the "odd" cam lobe and the other three cylinders are running advanced. I agree that this might not be possible due to interference between the vac advance and the fan housing. If the drive gear is installed wrong and the distributor is just turned to match it then there is no problem except poor fit of the vacuum advance and plug wires. This is just another example of a case where it is just better to do it by the book.
