Those rear slots are part of the internal fresh air ventilation system.
Air flows into the car from the front and exits *out* of these slots; you
will notice that there are slots in roughly the same location inside the
car. What Jim said earlier about the Bernoulli principle applies here,
also. Outside air flowing past the slots creates a low pressure area. The
cabin pressure is higher due to internal air flow so cabin air is sucked
through the slots to the outside. I had an exhaust leak once so as a test
I had taped these up but I still experienced the leak.

Exhaust fumes will be drawn in from bad: lower hatch seal; deck lid seal;
rear window seal (? I wouldn't have believed it until it was mentioned!);
heat exchanger/muffler seal.

...
What about the vents along the side right in front of the rear hatch?
 They have
openings inside the car right by the rear window. Would these end
up sucking in
fumes? It looks like they are designed to push air onto the inside
of the rear
hatch window, but we're not sure. I was thinking of temporarily duct
taping the
inside holes up to see if that made any difference. Any thougts on that?
