Piston retaining plate...

The retaining plate is not a VW thing, all the Teves brakes that I've worked
on except the 914 rears (now THAT's a wierd caliper) have them. The 20
degree cutout is there to keep the pad from wearing wedge-shaped. It's sort
of the leading shoe idea as applied to disk brakes. The retaining plate
just serves to maintain the proper 20 degree orientation. On the other
hand, I can't see that there would be any tendency for the piston to turn in
the absence of the plate.

I always install them, if only to make sure that I have the piston rotation
correct.
