Odd VIN, not really

I'm afraid that this confused me (and some dealers) for years. The problem
is that the model number is not the same as the first three digits of the VIN.
After 1965 the first digit is the same, and I *think* the second digit is
also the same, but the third digit of the model designates
rhd/lhd/plain/sunroof, while the third digit of the VIN (after 1965) is the
last digit of the model year.

There should be an aluminum ID plate in the front trunk. Your 67 should
have both the Model # and the VIN on it. Check it out and let us know if
this now makes sense. Of course it would have made more sense for VW to add
another digit to the VIN and make the 1st three digits of the VIN = Model #,
and let the 4th digit be the model year.
