patrick drop that t-3

patrick you said your not sure how to do it. ive dropped almost every car
ive owned and enjoy the looks of a car thats not got its but dragging and
its nose up. on my 66 square i dropped the front 2 notches and it leved out
the stance i.e. no more dragging butt and a lower profile in general. of all
the cars the t-3 was with out a dought the easiest. now be forwarned that
you may find a balljoint or a tierod end that may need to be replaced so
find a place that has the part just in case. it only takes about 1
afternoon to complete the entire job. if youve ever dropped or raised the
rear of a bug bus or t-3 than this should be a cake walk. also you dont need
any special tools or parts or anything but a little time. and you keep the
same ride, my sqaure has been lowered for 7 years and i love it. keep in
mind you will have to have a front end alignment since you will mess with
the balljoints and make sure all of you front end parts are in great shape
(including tires,brakes,balljoints,wheel bearings/races,shocks,tie rod ends
inner and out also that steering box). if you are a little loose now wait
till you change the angle of those trailing arms. youll feel like you out of
control. think safety not cheapo when it comes to quality of parts, thar be
a bunch of junk out in vw land and china is not where all your parts should
come from.
alright this is how it goes :
-remove wheel and tire
-remove the caliper. its no necessary to disconnect the brake line
-remove the nut and cotter pin and remove rotor
-unbolt brake backing plate and set aside
-remove bottom shock bolt and push out of your way
-remove the lower balljoint pinch bolt and seperate the lower trailing arm
from the spindle assembly, you may wish to put a floor jack under the arm to
prevent every thing from pulling apart very fast
-before the arm is unbolted make the stock setting for referance
-then remove the lock nut and tab with wrench and allen
-from there the arm can be pulled out
-to lower the car move the arm up and reinstall (two notches is a mild drop,
5 is pushing bottle caps )
-after youve decided how many notches to play with reinstall the arm and
bolt it back together, use the floor jack to pus the arm up and reattach the
lower balljoint.
-then close things up and move the other side.
now i shouldnt have to tell that always use floor jacks, wheel chocks!!!
also dont forget inspect everything for wear so yu can have the max for handling
good luck jonce at strtbug@ibm.net
