What was the production/sales Air conditioning was available in the U.S. as a dealer-installed option. Gas heaters were also available. I once received email from someone who described a "sleep-in extender" option that he'd had installed in his late-model squareback by a dealer in Texas. He claimed that it was a modification to the rear seat that allowed it to fold forward and/or lower than usual if the front seats were moved forward. This allowed for more room in the back for lying down so that you could more easily sleep in the car. I have a hard time imagining how such a contraption would work... Types I & II had extensive options over the years. These are known as M-codes; see Mark Janello's listing of M-codes at: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mjanello/ M-codes for Beetles are indicated on the identification plate in the front trunk. My squareback has no M-codes listed there. Then again, it doesn't appear to have any extra options. Does anybody know of M-code listings for Type III? (Actually, I take that back: I saw *one* M-code listed in my Bentley manual; I believe it was the code for the automatic transmission. Is this listed on the i.d. plate of anybody's automatic Type III? Mine is manual.) -Greg '71 squareback '63 Beetle
